Title: How does a DC converter works?

I can understand that an AC converter can increase or decrease easily voltage. But how can this do with DC?  How can for example produce 24 from 12VDC?

First, with a sine oscillator converts DC to AC

Then using a transformer the voltage is shifted to 24 (or whatever)

Then back to DC again using a bridge or something...

Is this way efficient? I mean, converting power 2 times would be quite inefficient.

Andre has posted the only way it can be done.

This is actually the way that inverters work. When DC is converted to AC, the AC can have any frequency or amplitude is desired...

And for big motors there are so big oscillators that make the current ac again and so big transformers? jesus.

Big motors? Check the pics below. It is an inverter for a 3 phase motor capable of delivering 850 Amps in each phase. It moves the motor in the pics, to get an idea, the cable tray appearing on the base of the motor is 40 cm wide!
