LCD 2X16 controller definition and pinout
« on: August 23, 2008, 02:01:34 AM »
Hello all.
This is my first post and i would like to say hello to all.

I was on a store to buy some etching powder. Waiting for the man, i saw a nice goodie, a 16X2 LCD display on offer, only for 4 euros. I bought one of them  ;D

The thing is that these displays shows absolutely nothing on them. Only i can see is 16 pins on the bottom right side as you look the display.. Also, i am almost sure that it has the HD44780 controller. I check the internet and i found that there are 2 kind of 2X16 displays, one has the pins on top and the other on bottom. All the ones that i found with the pins bottom right, have this controller as i told you.

Is it possible that there are other 2X16 displays like the one on the attached file that have different controller? The attached file shows EXACTLY the display that i have. It is not my foto. I took it from another site but is exactly like my LCD.

And another question. I have already download the controler datasheet, but is is only the controler datasheet  ::) ::) ::)
Where can i find out the pinout of my LCD?

Any help will be much appreciated
Thank you

I am not 100% sure but i think this controller is the one. You should ask the man you bought it to tell you the controller and also ask for a pinout diagram

But here is a pinout diagram i have for an LCD i have play with. It has also 16 pins but a bit different in arrangement. I hope it will help. Assure that the photo you have taken is not up-side down. Because if you rotate your photo by 180 degrees, then it fits with my documentation  ;D ;D ;D

I just wanted to ask what is the work of LCD 2X16 controller? Because I have not yet encountered that LCD controller. I am interested if I can also use it on my Samsung LCD.

The LCD screen without a controller, will have 40x16 interface wires, which requires specific voltage curve to operate normally. The controller is a chip that you send to it what you want to display, and it does all the hard work for you.
