Long forum down-times == Blame the spammers
« on: January 20, 2013, 13:31:18 PM »
The server and more specifically the forum is under heavy spam attack. I'm trying to find reliable and viable methods to stop the attack. Among these methods are:

- IP block
- More strict login
- User signup through email
- Forum available only to subscribed users
- Unleash snipers and panzers to locate the attackers
- nuclear attack to the attack IP locations

Until one of the above methods prove reliable, the forum may experience long off-line times. That is because heavy forum traffic leads to temporary site turn-off by the provider.

I'm sorry, there is really little that i can do.

Just disable automatic user activation and review every new user. There are not so many new users per week i think.

the problem is not the login users. i removed tens of thousand of inactive users. the spammers had this prepared long time ago (i suppose they have bots and they do this to many smf forums). First they prepare thousand of accounts. Each day a few, 3, maybe 5... Then, they start changing the signature to an ad, from shoes to porn. But these days they started to login in mass numbers. The system admin reported that the forum received more than 3000 requests per minute. And i'm not sure how to handle this situation. The site is hosted into a shared server so i cannot alter the apache settings, unless i host it into a dedicated server.

Glad to see the forum back georgios, I'd love  one day to show one of those clever spamming bastards just what a hammer can do to his hands/fingers.
