How to stop a rotating motor?
« on: October 14, 2008, 01:38:55 AM »
When a motor rotated with a load, it has some force that you cannot switch rotation immidiately. If you want to rotate the other way, you need first to stop it. Then you need a breke or something. This break is something like the car brakes? How can you stop mechanically the motor?

Thank you in advance for your reply.

There are mechanical, hydraulic and electrical breaks. What is your need? What is the load and the rpm? For example, you can use electrical or mechanical breaks for small loads and hydraulic for heavy loads. Electrical are more expensive than mechanical breaks but they need of no maintenance and can be used for high speeds. Electric breaks have much less stop torque than mechanical breaks and this is a great disadvantage. What you want to do?

There are motors with breaks attached to them. mechanical i think. When the motor is out of power, the break automatically stop it

If you don't have a motor allready you can buy one with brake as Colombo said. You can even give us the details or the application you want to use it and make a nice discussion .
