NASA in the 70s had great plans to colonize space

Back in 1970's, NASA had some great plans for space colonization. A huge space donut, almost a mile long in diameter, was planned to be the first space colony. Made from materials taken from moon ores like aluminum and glass, this self-sustained system would the new home for 10.000 people! And all these, just before the year 2000... Errrr...
