Drum implosion experiment on steroids [Physics]
posted April 18 2013 19:38.37 by Giorgos Lazaridis

The experiment is more or less known to all - Boil just a few water inside a metallic drum, then seal it and quickly put it into cold water. The drum will instantly implode. This happens because the heated air inside the drum is forced to condense when cooled. Since the drum is sealed, no air comes in creating therefore lower pressure than the atmospheric pressure. When this difference is sufficient, the drum implodes under the external pressure of the atmosphere.
Here is a recreation of this experiment on steroids! The drum is a 200 liters oil drum - And the bet is: Will the air pressure win?
