Speaker selection

Hi,

I intend to change my old speakers. I want a 5.1 speaker set. I usually play games ad listen to music. I almost never watch dvds on my computer. I wanted to get a 5.1 set but someone said that they are only useful when watching DVDs and that for better performance when playing games or listening to music i should get a 2.1 set.

What is your opinion about this?

New games also use 5.1 system but that's not the rule. For music now if you buy a good quality 2.1 with sub i don't believe you'll notice any difference compared to a mid cost 5.1 system, having also in account that you listen to music in your room and not in studio.

For music i would recomend 2.1. You will get better and more output power with the same or less money than a 5.1. 5.1 is not bad for music, bad is not better than 2.1 As for the games, as spic0m said, some may use 5.1. Check if the game that u play uses 5.1

Give some bucks more to get a good quality speaker no matter what 2.1 or 5.1

It is the quality that counts. For your room, two 20 Watt RMS each speaker are far more than enough...

What would be a good brand for speakers?

Depends on the money you have, and believe me, you can never have enough! 

Altec lansing, Sound blaster, Teac are fare enough in their mid product range, JBL, Koss, and other brands having as main products sound systems and not pc, offer better quality systems.

Sure, Harman Kardon you cannot buy for your home if you're not a CEO , but you can find them in all upper and mid priced Toshiba laptops!

If you don't have an upper limit in your wallet (lucky bastard  ) there are many hi-fi brands willing to take your money.
